John Casper Overhiser b.1782 came from Otsego county in 1811, and settled on West Creek in Wheeler, Steuben County. He died in the town in 1871, in his ninetieth year, and was specially noted for his large family, he having had twenty one children by his two marriages; and all these sons and daughters grew to maturity.
NOTES from 1894 reunion:
“John Casper Overhiser, the progenitor of the family, was born in Montgomery County, New York, in the year 1782, and came to the town of Wheeler in 1811, having previously resided in Otsego, Otsego County and Campbelltown, Steuben County, this state. At that time he purchased 100 acres of land of a Mr. Steven's, and about two years afterwards 48 1/2 acres more of a Mr. Knapp, which completed the family homestead. He resided upon this farm from the date of purchase until the year of 1864---a period of over 53 years. From 1864 to May 13, 1871, the date of his death, he resided with his son-in-law, Isaac Cranmer. A life extending over a period of over ninety years had witnessed marvelous changes in state and national development, and was filled with a multitude of ever varying experiences.”
"Uncle Casper," as he was familiarly called, was twice married, having three children by his first wife---one son and two daughters, and eighteen by his second wife--twelve sons and six daughters----twenty-one in all, a number suggestive of Patriarchal days.A full score of the children are still alive--only one, a daughter by first wife, having died whilst young.
