Son of Ernst Gräwe and Maria Elisabeth Gräwe, geborene Witte.
Ernst had a younger brother named Erich, and a sister named Anna.
Husband of Hildegard Gräwe, geborene Latta.
The couple had one child,a son named Udo.
Ironically enough Udo died from pneumonia on April 9, 1945 a day before his father.
His parents had a fur trade.Ernst was well educated and was a talented accordionist.
His widow Hildegard remarried in 1952.
Ernst Gräwe was shot by his Commander because he refused to participate in a firing squad. 5 members of a Dutch resistance movement were sentenced to death and were to be shot on the spot by a firing squad. The other designated Germans for the execution carried out their assignments. Less than 45 minutes after the executions, the first Canadian liberators arrived in Deventer.
Buried nieuwe Algemene begraafplaats Diepenveen.
Reburied 25/03/1949 Ysselsteyn.
The described event is also known as the "Twentol drama".
A memorial in Deventer was erected in memory of the drama and a plaque on it also bears Ernst's name.
