Oren C. Carmin, 93, passed away at Marion General Hospital at 12:02 pm Wednesday, January 4, 2012. He was born in Matthews, the son of the late Albert and Blanche (Harris) Carmin. He graduated from Jefferson Township High School in 1938.
He married Opal Corn on August 23, 1941. She preceded him in death on April 22, 2007.
In 1983, Mr. Carmin retired from Eastbrook Community Schools after 26 years as a bus driver and custodian. He was also a farmer in the Grant County area for 55 years. He was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church, Matthews, and a former member of the Matthews Lions Club and Matthews Civil Defense.
Oren was a member of the 1938 Jefferson Township basketball team that won the Grant County tournament and was voted the most valuable player. He enjoyed coaching and umpiring for Matthews and Upland Little League for many years.
Survivors include a daughter, Shirley (Harold) Biggs, Matthews; one granddaughter, Stacey Alston; two great grandchildren, Desire (Mike) Mansfield, and Ronnie Alston; and two great great grandchildren, Logan and Madison.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Orville and Fletcher Carmin, and a sister, Fern Rider.
