Duncan mustered into service at Camp Dick Robinson, Oct 09,1861 in Co G, 4th Ky Mounted Inf, he reenlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant on Feb 18,1864. Duncan was captured at Newnan, GA, July 30,1864 and held at Andersonville prison in GA, until being exchanged Sept 19,1864, he contracted chronic dysentery during his imprisonment for which he was discharged from the service in Jan 1865.
Duncan was a wagon maker up to the time of the war, he returned to Rockcastle Co, becoming a farmer until his death. He died on Nov 11,1906 in Rockcastle Co.
He is buried in the Berea cemetery. Div. C, Sec.8, Lot 6
