Grosse Pointe Farms resident, Arlene Roy Hendrie, 82, died peacefully Monday, January 2, 2012 at Sunrise Senior Living surrounded by her family.
She was the daughter of the late Mary A. Earle and the late Ross Roy, founder of Ross Roy, Inc. Advertising Agency and wife of the late John A. (Jack) Hendrie, Detroit advertising executive and notable Great Lakes sailboat and iceboat racer.
She was an accomplished concert pianist who began piano studies at age 8 and performed her first piano recital at age 12.
Mrs. Hendrie was graduated from Sacred Heart Convent in Grosse Pointe Farms. She studied piano at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from the Detroit Conservatory of Music. She was a member of and performed for Morning Music Club, Tuesday Musicale of Detroit, Grosse Pointe Chamber Music Society and a soloist with the Grosse Pointe Symphony Orchestra. She also performed many piano duets with her daughter, Sara and her late mother, Mary A. Earle.
Mrs. Hendrie's other affiliations included the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Historical Society, Detroit Zoological Society, Milk Fund Charities and the Grosse Pointe Symphony Orchestra, where she served as a Director. She was a member of the Country Club of Detroit and the Grosse Pointe Club.
Mrs. Hendrie loved playing tennis with her family at the "Little Club" and loved watching her children and grandchildren play. She was an outstanding writer and an avid walker and reader. She was known affectionately as the "Trash Angel" of Grosse Pointe Farms for her great efforts in picking up litter on her daily walks. She was often seen on G.P. Boulevard and Fisher Road cleaning up. She was very proud to receive two beautification awards from the City of Grosse Pointe Farms.
She is survived by two daughters, Susan Elizabeth Rohde and Sara Alexandra Sessions; three sons, John Alexander Hendrie, Jr., David William Hendrie and Philip Roy Hendrie; 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren; two half-brothers Rex R. Roy and Ross R. Roy. Mrs. Hendrie was predeceased by her daughter, Mary Arlene Hendrie, two brothers, Robert R. Roy and John H. Roy, and a step brother, Henry Earle, III.
A funeral service was held for the immediate family on Thursday, January 5, at the Elmwood Cemetery chapel.
