Funeral services for Mrs. Opal R. (Ledbetter) Crabtree, 90, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007, at Central Baptist Church in Clinton Township, MI, with Rev. Michael Nardin officiating.
Burial will be in Cadillac Memorial Gardens East.
Mrs. Crabtree died Thursday, Dec. 28 at St. Joseph's Medical Center. She attended Alpine Institute, where she was valedictorian of her graduating class. In the late 1930s, she attended Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, then attended Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. She first taught school in Overton County, then returned to Detroit, where she worked as a substitute teacher, then received a full-time position with Roseville Board of Education. She retired in 1978.
In 1982, she was elected county commissioner for Overton County's 3rd District.
She was a member of Roseville Retired Teacher's Association, was a long-time volunteer at St. John's Macomb Hospital, served as principal at Fairview Christian School, and was a member of Central Baptist Church.
Known to her great-grandchildren as Grandma O, she was a devoted Detroit Tiger fan.
Born October 19, 1916, in Overton County, she was the daughter of the late Joe Albert Cleveland and Gulie Mae (Robins) Ledbetter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Crabtree; a brother, J.S. Layton Ledbetter; and a sister, Vilda Pauline Myers.
Survivors include 2 sons and a daughter-in-law, Joey and Dione Crabtree of Sterling Heights, MI, and James Crabtree of Roseville; 3 daughters and 2 sons-in-law, Sharon and Jim Harmon of Port Huron, MI, Dorothy Harwick of Roseville, and Martha and Frank Hibbert of Capac, MI; 13 grandchildren, Cheri, Bob, Jeff, Ken, Kimberly, Michelle, Steve, Scott, Rebecca, Darick, Jerald, Aimee, and Katie; 20 great-grandchildren, most of whom live in and around Macomb County; and nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Foundation.
