Daniel J was the third of six children born to Daniel & Amerilla (Jones) Pettengill. He enlisted as a Private on 21 December 1863 at age of 22, with the Union, and
enlisted in Company K, 4th Calvary Regiment, Michigan, on December 30, 1863. On 28 Feb 1864, he joined the Regiment at Nashville, Tennessee. Daniel died (of disease?) at age 23 yrs, 5 mos, and 19 days, on January 1, 1865. His brother, Charles, also died during the Civil War, and they share a tombstone in Flushing cemetery. Charles is actually buried in the National Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
