Private First Class Haagensen was a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in Korea on January 1, 1953.

The body of PFC Richard A. Haagensen, 18, Duluth, Marine, who killed last New Year's Day in Korea, will arrive in Duluth at noon Monday.
Military funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm. Wednesday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel and burial will be at Soldier's Rest, Oneota Cemetery. The Rev. Wayne Gehman will officiate. The 16th Special Infantry, Duluth Marine Corps Reserves, Major H.G. Bowes, commander will perform the military rites.
PFC Haagensen is survived by his parents, Mr and Mrs Bendick Haagensen, 216 West Second Street, seven brothers Robert, US. Air Force, Korea, Roy, U.S. Air Force, Bangor, Maine and Ronald, Donald, Duane, Dennis and Daniel, Duluth; two sisters Darlene and Rene Duluth, Duluth; paternal grandmother Mrs Antoinette Haagensen, Chetek, Wisconsin and maternal grandmother Mrs Anna Clute, Bemodji.
He was a machine gunner with he Seventh Regiment of the First Marine Division. He enlisted August and arrived in Korea in August, 1952.
Haagensen was a native Duluthian attending grade schools and Lincoln Junior High School
Richard was awarded the following medals for military service.
Purple Heart, Combat Service Ribbon, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean War Service Medal
