NORTHFIELD -- Alvan Ferdinand Albers, 89, of Northfield and formerly of Dundas, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mainstreet Moravian Church, Northfield, with the Rev. Sharon Benson officiating. Burial will be at Groveland Cemetery in Dundas. Visitation is scheduled for 4-6 p.m. Saturday at Bierman Funeral Home, Northfield.

Alvan Ferdinand Albers, the son of Henry F. C. and Louise (Zimmerman) Albers, was born April 11, 1913, on a farm west of Dundas. After attending country and Dundas schools, he graduated from Northfield High School in 1930. He spend his first year of college at Carleton College, then transferred to St. Olaf College where he received a bachelor of arts degree in biology in 1935. He played for both colleges' football teams. He was accepted to the University of Alabama Medical School, but because of his father's death, he instead worked in Ohio as a seed salesman for Northrup King. He and his brother started the Albers Brothers Hatchery partnership, which lasted many years until each brother decided to farm independently. On Jan. 23, 1937, he married Vivian Hazel Raney of Faribault in the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Iowa. They settled in Dundas. He belonged to the Faribault Sky Club and taught flying and aerial acrobatics. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and Eagles of Faribault, the Dundas Fire Department and a bowling team. He was the mayor of Dundas for 17 years and served on the Northfield School Board for nine years. He was a lifetime member of the Moravian Church in Northfield. In 1994, they moved to Park View West at the Northfield Retirement Center. In 1998, he moved to the Northfield Care Center. For the past 20 years, he has battled Parkinson's disease.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian, of Northfield; three children, Diane Albers Lee (and Clifton Corzatt), Bruce (and Jane) Albers, Mark (and Nancy) Albers; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Albers of Dundas.

He was preceded in death by five brothers; two sisters; and one grandchild, Marnie Albers.
