Mary's mother died when she was a baby and and she had always been in poor health so she was cared for with great attention and love by her father. She had a considerable estate from her Father's business and farm. After his death she ran his tanning business and the family's large farm. She hired Thomas Proctor Jr. as a farm manager and built a home for him next to her own on Main Street. She lived in the Gambrell house across from what is now Hollis High School As she never went to school and had tutors because of her precarious health, she always had an interest in public education and endowed the Hollis Township with $10,000.00 at her death if they would build a High School which they did in 1879. Mary was living with a Helen Smith age 56 in the 1850 Federal Census.
