Ray Allen was the son of James "Ross" and Matilda R. Allen. He was first married to Juel Day Kenney and, following their divorce, to the actress, Fay DeWitt, with no children from either marriage. He was a man of many creative talents, with his most prominent success as a movie and comedy writer in Hollywood. He attended public schools in New Albany and once worked as a reporter for the old Louisville Herald-Post. He had early jobs as a photographer, publicity man and in carnival production. He was closely associated with Frank Edwards, the TV personality, and Bert Kenney, a vaudeville actor (later his father-in-law). He had written for comedians Bob Hope, Jackie Gleason, Red Buttons, Jerry Lewis, Jan Murray, Steve Allen and Don Ameche. He also helped write script for the "road" movies starring Hope and Bing Crosby. Ray eventually met a violent death at his apartment in Hollywood, Calif. His estranged wife (actress Fay DeWitt) was held for questioning in the death but later was released.
