In 1851 he married Margaret Crowley. They came to California in 1855 and lived in San Francisco for three years, then moved to San Mateo county and entered into business on the coast.
His early political career consisted of being chairman of the Board of Supervisors, a position he held for many years. He was then elected to the California Assembly, and, with the exception of two terms, was a member of the Senate for twenty years.
His first Senatorial position was as a representative of what was then known as the Fifth District which comprised a part of San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Cruz counties.
