Mary was born at Caledonia, Houston Co., Minnesota 29 August 1871; died 1960; buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Caledonia, Houston Co., Minnesota [Houston Co. VR, Births, Bk. B, p. 7; Houston Co. Journal, 5 Sept. 1871; g.s.].

Mary married at Caledonia, Houston Co., Minnesota 28 November 1893, John Frank SMALLEY, of Little Falls, Morrison Co., Minnesota [Caledonia Journal, 28 November 1893; Houston Co. VR, Marr., Bk. 1889-1894, p. 350]. Their wedding was witnessed by C.H. SMALLEY and Lu M. SHEPPARD.

Mary visited cousins at Decorah, Iowa in the summer of 1883 [Caledonia Journal, 15 Aug. 1883]. Mary attended the female college at Albert Lea, Freeborn Co., Minnesota, in the fall of 1886 [Caledonia Journal, 22 Dec. 1886]. Mary visited relatives in Chicago with her father in the summer of 1890 [Caledonia Journal, 25 June 1890]. She entertained at a candy pull in the spring of 1892 [Caledonia Journal, 20 Mar. 1892]. That same year she visited relatives at Decorah, Iowa [Caledonia Journal, 15 Oct. 1892].

Mary and John removed to St. Paul, Ramsey Co., Minnesota, shortly thereafter, where J. Frank was a deputy collector for the U.S. Internal Revenue Department [St. Paul Dir., 1894-5, 1899-1900; 1900 U.S. Census]. Her aunt and stepmother, Hattie Dunbar HARRIES visited her at Mary's residence at Minneapolis in December 1894 [Obituary of her stepmother, Caledonia Argus]. They resided at St. Paul, Ramsey Co., Minnesota, by early 1900 [Houston Co. Journal, 31 Jan. 1900], where they resided as of July 1921 [1920 U.S. Census; W. H. Harries Obituary]. Judging from the birthplaces of their children this family apparently resided in California in 1906 and in Iowa in 1912. In 1910, they were enumerated at Sioux City, Woodby Co., Iowa. In 1920 they were enumerated at St. Paul and in 1930 they were enumerated at Minneapolis.

In 1940, Mary was enumerated with her daughter, Dorothy’s family, at Tivoli, Dutchess Co., New York.

Mary resided at Lewistown, New York during February 1955 [Obituary of her sister, Anstis].

i. George, b. in Minn. Feb. 1896. He was enumerated with his parents in 1900 but not in 1910.

ii. Jack Girault, b. at St. Paul, Ramsey Co., Minn. 12 Oct. 1901; d. at Oxnard, Ventura Co., Calif. 4 Feb. 1984 [Calif. Death Index, 1940-1997]. He was enumerated with his parents in 1910 and 1920. He m. Elizabeth ____, who was b. in NY in 1904.

iii. Dorothy G., b. in Calif. 20 Feb. 1905; d. 12 Dec. 1984; bu. at Pleasant Lawn Cemetery, Parish, Oswego Co., New York. She was enumerated with her parents in 1910 and 1920. About 1930, Dorothy m. Tobias John COLLINS. He was b. 7 Feb. 1904 at Utica, Oneida Co., NY; d. at Clarence, Erie Co., NY 18 Jan. 1990; bu. at Pleasant Lawn Cemetery, Parish, Oswego Co., New York. They were enumerated at Tivoli, Dutchess Co., New York in the 1940 US Census. Children; surname Collins: 1. Barbara, b. ca. 1931, 2. Nancy, b. ca. 1937.

iv. Mary Anstis, b. in Sioux, Woodbury Co., Iowa 18 Oct. 1909; mentioned in W.D. BELDEN's diary for 1936. She was enumerated with her parents in 1910, 1920, and 1930.
