Founder of the Cincinnati (Ohio) Art Museum . Charles West came to Cincinnati and made his fortune in the flour industry. At the opening of the Cincinnati Industrial Exposition in September 1880, a letter from West was read in which he agreed to donate $150,000 toward the construction of an art museum, contingent upon a matching amount being raised by public subscription. The amount was raised, Mayer Charles Jacobs proclaimed October 9 "Museum Day" urging that I be recognized and celebrated as a public holiday. With construction money available, West preferred Eden Park, with its spectacular views and superior air and light. James McLaughlin was chosen to design the building. West did not live to see the museum completed.
