In 1910 she and her parents and six siblings lived in a house they were renting at 7516 Ardmore Street in Swissvale, PA. Her father worked as a carpenter in car shops. William and Clarence worked as clerks at a signal works.

In 1920 she and her parents and sister Elsie lived in a house they owned at 7430 Duquesne Avenue in Swissvale. Her father worked as a carpenter in a car shop, and Elsie as a bill clerk at a wire mill. They rented an apartment in the house to her brother Clyde, his wife, and their son.

In 1930 she and her husband and their daughter lived in an apartment they were renting for $35 a month from her parents in their house at 7430 Duquesne Avenue in Swissvale. They did not have a radio. He worked as a laborer for a switch manufacturing company.

In 1940 she and Esker and their two daughters lived in the same apartment. Her parents were charging them just $25 a month rent after the Great Depression. Esker worked as a bench hand for a signal manufacturer, with an income in 1939 of $1500 for 52 weeks of work.
