GEORGE CONKLIN DIES SUDDENLY: RITES SATURDAY
George C. Conklin, 68, well known Holyoke man and a resident of this community more than half a century, died suddenly on Wednesday afternoon of last week, November 26, 1952, while working near the Holyoke Cooperative Association elevator.
Death was attributed to a heart attack. Mr. Conklin seemed to be feeling as well as usual when he returned to work at the elevator after the lunch hour. He was seen behind the elevator at 1:15 o'clock, cleaning up some grain that had been spilled, and his body was found about 10 minutes later in the same location.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the local Methodist church under the direction of Rev. H.R. Bauer, assisted by Rev. Louis A. Haruf of Yuma, former pastor of the church here. Burial was in Holyoke Memorial Park.
One of a family of ten children, George Cleveland Conklin was born January 9, 1885, at Odebolt, Iowa to James W.L. and Mary Ann [Preston] Conklin. When he was 13 years old, in 1898, the family traveled to Colorado by covered wagon and settled just one mile east of the old Hilltop school.
On October 9, 1919, Mr. Conklin was united in marriage with Rosa B. Stephens at Kalispell, Montana. To this union were born four sons and three daughters.
Mr. Conklin had been employed at the Co-Op Elevator 29 1/2 years. He was a good workman and was described as a "fixed asset" by the manager of the elevator. He was a member of the Holyoke Presbyterian church, and for many years was an active member of the I.O.O.F. lodge.
Surviving Mr. Conklin are his wife; three sons, Harvey, Robert and Frank, all of Holyoke; three daughters, Ruth and Margaret of Holyoke, and Mrs. Dora Tatum, Sedgwick; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Show, Mrs. Edith Kinch and Mrs. Minnie White, Holyoke, and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James Wesley Conklin; five brothers and one sister.
