Brevet Lt. Colonel Lewis R. Stegman, 102nd N.Y.Vols. Stegman at age 22 enlisted September 30, 1861 at New York City to serve three years. He was mustered in as Captain, Co. E, 102nd New York Vol. Infantry on March 5, 1862. He was first wounded severely at Cedar Mountain, Va. August 9, 1862; again wounded at Gettysburg July 3,1863; wounded in action at Ringgold Gap, Ga. November 27, 1863. He was mustered in as Major February 12, 1864 and once more wounded in action June 15, 1864 at Pine Mountain, Ga. Stegman was discharged October 24, 1864 for disability from wounds. He was breveted Lt. Col. of Volunteers. He saw subsequent service in the U.S. Veteran Volunteers. The 102nd N.Y. lost heavily in General Pope's Campaign in 1862; Antietam, 1862; Chancellorsville, 1863; Gettysburg, 1863; Peach Tree Creek, Ga. 1864; Sherman's Campaign, 1864-1865. Total casualties were 6 officers and 45 enlisted men killed in action; 1 officer and 22 enlisted men died of wounds; 16 officers and 233 enlisted men wounded/recovered; 4 officers and 102 enlisted men missing; aggregate total 429.
He later served as sheriff of Kings County, New York.
In 1912 he served as chairman of the New York Monuments Commission.
