Mrs. H. Hammann Claimed by Death Monday Evening
Passed Away at Area Hospital After Protracted Illness; Funeral Today
Mrs. Hulda Marie Hammann, wife of Herbert P. Hammann, well known and highly esteemed residents of the Carlinville area, passed away on Monday evening, Mar. 17, at 6:45 o'clock at the Carlinville Area hospital, following an extended illness. She attained an age of 65 years, 1 month and 16 days.
Mrs. Hammann was born at Carlinville on Feb. 1, 1893, a daughter of the late Andrew and Fredericka Lentz Young, and on October 15, 1919, was united in marriage to Herbert P. Haamann. The young couple first lived on a farm in Brushy Mound township, where they resided until 1954, when they took possession of their new home, located on Route 108, about five miles east of Carlinville. Five children were born of their union.
Mrs. Hamman was a member of the United Church of Christ and of the Women's Guild of that congregation; she was a charter member of the Honey Point unit of Home Bureau and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a devoted wife and mother, always willing and ready to make self-sacrifices for the benefit of her family and home. She was very fond of flowers and enjoyed the association of her many friends, by whom she was held in high esteem, a fact which is attested by the more than 600 letters and cards which she received during her illness.
She is survived by her husband Herbert P. Hammann; two daughters, Mrs. Alice Tostberg, of Carlinville, and Mrs. Betty Kessinger, of Girard; two sons, Herbert Hammann, Jr., of Carlinville, and Leonard Hammann, of Gillespie; 10 grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Reiher and Mrs. Anna Perrottet, of Carlinville; Mrs. Carrie Dey, of Urbana, and Mrs. Herman Ostercamp of Forest Park, Ill; five brothers, Charles and Albert Young, of Litchfield, Walter Young, of Carlinville; Victor Young, of Memphis, Tenn., and Elmer Young, of Wood River. One son, Warren, and two brothers and one sister preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held this (Thursday) afternoon. at 2:30 o'clock at the United Church of Christ, the pastor, Rev. H.O. Renken, officiating. Wendell Armour will sing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Going Down the Valley," with Mrs. Kathryn Adams as accompanist. Burial will be in Mayfield Memorial Park. Elmer Jones, of Springfield, Barney Redfern, Orville Emery, Herbert Mieher, Robert DeSilva, and Richard Buckles will serve as honorary pallbearers. Active pallbearers will be the following nephews: Wayne and Merle Young, Archie Kasten, Gerald Ostercamp, Joe Reiher, and Virgil Dey.
