His father, Rev. James W. Savage, a native of Missouri, who moved to Texas in 1840, lived in Grayson county until 1848 and then went to Oregon and later to California. On returning to Texas in 1871, Rev. James W. Savage lived for a while in Cooke county and then settled in Montague county, where he has since resided. He is a minister of the Christian Church, and farmer. Rev. Hiram Savage, a Primitive Baptist preacher, grandfather of Senator Savage, resided many years in Grayson county, dying there about thirty years since.

Senator Savage's mother, Mrs. Charity (Vernon) Savage, died in Montague county in 1886. Her father, George W. Vernon, a farmer, died in Oregon in 1868.

The following is from a family member:

James Wilson Savage was married a second time to a Martha Ann and they appear together in 1900 Census. Her Death Certificate indicates that she was a Spears (Speir/Speer) by birth and she was born in 1843-45 and died July 24 1925 and was buried July 25 1925 in the Salona Cemetery.

The first James had a nephew named Hiram and James Wilson named one of his sons Hiram Frank Savage. The first James had a sister Jerusha, who married a Warden, and she is my 4th gr. grandmother. Hence there was no grandfather Hiram.

James Wilson's first wife, Charity M. Vernon, was born 1831, MO and she married James Wilson April 9 1850 in Grayson Co., TX (they were living with her parents at the time the 1850 Census was taken, on 17th Day of December) and they departed from there to MO to join a Wagon Train to Oregon Territory 1853 to reside in LINN (not Lynn) Co. and then moved to Solano Co., CA (1870 Census) and then back to Texas. Charity died 1887 is buried in the Antioch-Gladys Cemetery, Montague Co., TX.
