WWII Army veteran serving in the European Theater


George G. Gross, 83, of Brookline Manor, RR 1, Mifflintown, and formerly of Thompsontown, died at 7:25 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at the manor.

He was born Sept. 29, 1921, in Thompsontown, the son of the late Frank D. and Elizabeth (Brubaker) Gross. His wife of nearly 53 years, Marian K. (Kauffman) Gross, whom he married on May 24, 1952, survives.

In addition to his wife, also surviving are: two sons, Fredrick M. Gross and wife Jeanette, RR 3, Mifflintown, and George S. Gross and wife Nancy, Liverpool; two daughters, Linda S. Roth and husband the Rev. James Roth, Manheim, and Sheila M. Croak and husband John, Hummelstown; a brother, Merrill M. Gross, Mount Wolf; and five grandsons, Matthew G. Gross, Jason P. Gross, Geoffrey S. Gross, Patrick R. Roth and Erik J. Roth.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, two brothers and one sister.

He was a 1939 graduate of Thompsontown High School.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater.

He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Thompsontown, and a past president and member of Refrigeration Service Engineers Society and Elks Lodge 663, Lewistown.

He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, gardening and making maple syrup and loved everything about nature.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from the Mifflintown Chapel of Brown Funeral Homes Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with Pastor Louise A. Knotts and Intern Pastor Chris D. Mathiason officiating. Interment will follow in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown.

Viewing will be held from 1 p.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.
