US Congressman. He received an Associate's degree from Young Harris College in 1951. He was then employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and served in the Coast Guard from 1952 to 1955. Jenkins received a law degree from the University of Georgia in 1959 and became an attorney. From 1959 to 1962 he served on the staff of Congressman Phil Landrum. He was an Assistant US Attorney for Georgia's Northern District from 1962 to 1964, and he served as Pickens County Attorney from 1968 to 1972. In 1976 he was the successful Democratic candidate for a seat in the US House of Representatives, and he served eight terms, 1977 to 1993. He did not run for reelection in 1992 and lived in the town of Jasper, where he worked for a government relations firm and served as a member of Georgia's Board of Regents. He died at Piedmont Hospital after an extended illness. Ed Jenkins National Recreation Area in Georgia is named for him.
