Aaron G. "Chapo" De La O, 65, life long resident of Dona Ana, NM left this life to enter a new beginning on Friday Aug. 17, 2007. Chapo as he was fondly known was born on Dec. 9, 1941 to Aaron and Esther Garcia De La O in Dona Ana, NM.
Chapo was a veteran of the US Army where he served his country honorably as a Paratrooper with 101st Airborne Division, 187 Infantry Arkansas, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. After completing his military service Chapo worked for White Sands Missile Range fire department. He earned his way up to Fire Chief and remained there until his retirement. After retirement ,he stayed home for a while and took care of his granddaughter/great niece Erin Nicole. When she began school, he got bored and went back to work at Dimar Systems. He was also the former President of Dona Ana Mutual Domestic Water Consumers Association until his illness caused him to step down.
He could always be found at Wal-Mart with the apple of his eye Erin Nicole and Anastacia Michelle. He was a loving brother, uncle, great-uncle, cousin and friend. Chapo will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include Michelle Montoya and her daughter Erin Nicole whom he loved and raised as his daughter and granddaughter; four brothers; Ernie, Frank, James and Paul De La O. Sister Nancy Montoya. Also included are sixteen nieces and nephews, twenty-four great-nieces and nephews.
Chapo was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Lee Garcia and Albert De La O.
A prayer vigil will be Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007 at Our Lady of Purification Church, 5525 Cristo Rey in Dona Ana, NM. Family and friends will join together to celebrate the Funeral Mass at 10am Thursday August 23, 2007 also at Our Lady of Purification with Fr. Miguel Macaya officiating. Rite of Committal for his cremated remains will follow at the Dona Ana Cemetery.
Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be his nephews; Randy, James, Ernest Jr., Johnny, Carl, Isaac, Brian, Anthony and Aaron De La O, Miguel (Mikey) O. Montoya, Mark Valenzuela and Nick Teixeira.
