Born in Russia/Germany or Europe, per various censuses, or Lithuania per family oral history; birth date is per death certificate. Joseph's father was Irving Israel Cooper, but it is unknown if he came to the US with his children; the name of Joseph's mother is unknown. Joseph arrived 23 July 1889 at the port of NY. Joseph was a second cousin to his wife, Helen Cooper. (Her maiden name was also Cooper.) They married 03 Feb 1901 in Elmira, Chemung, NY, USA. They had 4 children, all b. in PA: Ann (1903-1981), Rose (1904-1988), Loretta (1907-?), and Irving Israel (1908-1982). The family lived in Montgomery, Lycoming, PA from ~1903-death of Helen, Dec. 1934. Joseph owned a store in Montgomery where he sold clothing, etc. Joseph married second Bess __, after Dec. 1934, but place also unknown. They lived in Florida where Joseph died while at the Ramsey Nursing Home in Miami-Dade County.

Joseph's brother was Jacob Cooper, FAG # 83611932, and his sister Lillian Cooper Blostein, FAG #66515190. Additional siblings are Helen Cooper Oppenheimer, Samuel Cooper, Bertha Cooper Tatelbaum, and Dora Cooper Kremer.
