Ellen was the daughter of Alex Lilly and Kate Mackey. She married Thomas Ashley on 02 Feb 1898 in Storm Lake, Buena Vista, Iowa. They were the parents of Alice (1898), Thomas B (1900), and Catherine Nelly (1908).
September 4, 1930 - Newell Mirror - This community in general was deeply grieved last Thursday evening, August 28, upon learning of the death of Mrs. Ellen Ashley, who died here at her home after an illness of two weeks.
Ellen Lilly was born in Linn county, September 18, 1879. At the age of four years she, with her parents, moved to a farm near Newell.
At the age of eighteen she was united in marriage to Thos. Ashley. To this union were born three children, Alice, Thomas, and Katherine. Her husband preceded her in death February 2, 1917.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning at nine o'clock at Our Lady of Good Council church, Fonda, Iowa. Rev. D.J. Helen officiating. Interment was made in Mt. Zion cemetery.
She leaves to mourn her loss three children: Alice (Mrs. Mike Hoye), Thomas, and Katherine of Newell; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Hilly; three brothers, Joe, Laurens; Laurence, Fonda; and seven grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends.
