U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Davidson College in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he graduated from University of North Carolina Law School, in 1949, was a lawyer in private practice and was a assistant general counsel to the United States House of Representatives, (1951-52). He also was solicitor of Duplin County, North Carolina, General Court, (1954-58) and a Duplin County, judge, (1958-60). In 1961 he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-seventh Congress and to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1977. Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law.
