Sandra Jane 'Sandy' Cates, 71, of Grand Island, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2011, at home with her family at her side.

Sandra was born Jan. 31, 1940, at Hoskins, Neb., the daughter of Clemens and Lorena (Winter) Weich.

Survivors are: husband, Max Cates; daughter and son-in-law, Heidi and Scott Brammer of Omaha, and their children, Chase, Cole and Kate; sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Stan Talcott of Maitland, Florida and a host of relatives and friends.

Sandra was preceded in death by: parents and two sons, Matthew Cates and Michael Cates.

Sandra grew up in Hoskins and graduated from Norfolk High School. She attended Concordia State College and received her Bachelor's degree in education.

She was united in marriage to Max Allen Cates on June 7, 1964, in Grand Island at Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple made Grand Island their home.

Sandra started her teaching career at Trinity Lutheran before becoming a teacher and later director for the preschool at First Presbyterian Church.

Sandra was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was extremely active volunteering for various committees, singing in the choir, playing handbells, serving as an elder, and teaching Sunday School. Her strong faith was evident every day of her life.

She was also an active member of the local garden club and the Nebraska State Education Association.

Sandra enjoyed the outdoors and gardening. Her other hobbies consisted of sewing and crafts, along with music and sports. She attended various local concerts and sporting events in support of the community. She also cherished time spent with her three grandchildren.

Inurnment was in the West Lawn Memorial Cemetery, Grand Island, NE.
