Maggie was born November 4, 1861 in Ohio. She was the sister of Montana's Senator Thomas H. Carter. She married Thomas Cruse in Helena on March 2, 1886. They lived on the corner of Benton Avenue and Lawrence Street. Maggie had one child, Mary Margaret "Mamie" Cruse, on December 17, 1886. Maggie died on December 27, 1886 of nervous prostration from childbirth at age 25, just ten days after giving birth. She was buried in the old St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, disinterred, and moved into the Mausoleum at Resurrection Cemetery in 1914.
