Arthur Duffield Dies at Sisseton
Arthur Duffield, age 77, died at Tekawitha hospital in Sisseton, S.D. at 8 A.M. December 15, following a five year illness. He had been hospitalized for two and one-half years. Death was caused by cerebral accident.
Cyrus Arthur Duffield, son of David and Lydia Stafford Duffield, was born near Abingdon, Illinois on September 26, 1881. He came to Leveland Farm north of Browns Valley in 1908, which was his family's home until 1938 when they moved to the present Duffield farm just on the edge of Browns Valley.
He was a farmer all of his active life, and also the agent for State Farm and Town Mutual insurance companies, whose policyholders he regarded as his friends.
For twenty years he served as Traverse County Commissioner from the first district, during many of those years as a member of the county welfare board. His service during those years, encompassing the time of drought and depression, was a dedicated one. .
He helped to found Arthur Community Club and to build its community hall which was a valued gathering place in the days when farmers' contacts with town activities were more difficult to achieve than they are today. For many years he served on the rural school board of District Two in Arthur township. He was a founder of the Valley View Cemetery Association, and served as its secretary-treasurer until his illness. He was a member of the Methodist church.
Mr. Duffield's parents are no longer living. A sister, Lalla Duffield Burkett, also preceded him in death. His brother Clyde lives near Avon, Illinois.
Nina Hatchitt Duffield, to whom he was married in 1910, died in 1926. A son Stanley, officer in the U.S. Air Force, was killed in action over Berlin in 1944.
Viola Nedrow Duffield, to whom he was married in Zimmerman, Minnesota on March 1, 1933, is his widow. Five sons and two daughters survive.
The children are Ward, Lee, Clare, Keith (Bill), Alan, Fonty (Mrs. James Dady), and Patricia (Mrs. Martin Kyro). Four live in Browns Valley; Lee in Boulder, Colorado; Mrs. Dady in Sisseton, S.D. and Mrs Kyro in Minneapolis.
There are nineteen grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in the Browns Valley Methodist church Dec. 18, with burial in the Valley View cemetery. Rev. Elmer Gebhard, pastor, officiated, assisted by Rev. M.L. Brann of Willmar, a family friend and former Browns Valley pastor.
Pallbearers were: Ted Deyo, W.J. Roberts, Alfred Falkingham, Nick Hess, Palmer Hanson, Hans Christenson. Honorary pallbearers were: Harry Gail, L.S. Baer, L. Kinney, Wm. Paul, Wm. H.Week, Roy Miller.
