Rachel G. offered this obituary published in the Dunn County News, Menomonie WI on 4 Mar 1920:

Colfax (Wisconsin), March 3 - Ira Simpson passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elvira Viets, at 10 a.m. Wednesday, February 25, at the advanced age of 94 years, 8 months and 21 days, from general decline incidental to old age. The deceased was born in New York state, June 4, 1825, and remained there until 24 years of age when he moved to Pennsylvania. After a short time he moved to Ohio, where he made his home until seventeen years ago when he came to Colfax and has since lived with his daughter. Being left parentless when an infant, he was reared at the home of a grandmother til he was nine years of age, after which he virtually supported himself. He was married to Eliza Bogart on April 1, 1849, and to this union were born six children, two of whom, a boy and a girl, preceded him in death, as also the wife, who died November 11, 1863. The surviving children are William Simpson of Erie, Pa.; Mrs. Elvira Viets of Colfax; Willard Simpson of Miles, Wash., and Mrs. Elmira Benson of Ontario, Cal., who will cherish the memory of a long life well spent. After the death of his first wife, Mr. Simpson was married in August 1864 to Marietta Cheesman, to which union no children were born. The deceased was a member of the Methodist church from early life. He never used liquor or tobacco and always took healthful exercises each day. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the parlor at the Royal Hotel, the home of his daughter; Rev. E.J. Sachtjen preaching the sermon. The remains were sent to his old home in Pennsylvania for interment.
