Henry Barrett, son of Edmund and Matilda Barrett, was born near Sugar Grove, Pennsylvania, March 20, 1849. He was educated in the public schools of the community. He worked at farming and as an engineer in the oil regions in Pennsylvania in his young manhood days.

He was married to Addie Thorpe on September 2, 1871. They came to Missouri in the spring of 1875 and settled near what is now Skidmore in Nodaway county. His nearest town when he came to Missouri was Bigelow, MO. Later the towns of Quitman and Graham became their trading points.

He later moved from the farm into Skidmore and went into the mercantile business. He continued in this work until his death which occurred in Skidmore, August 20, 1929, at the age of 80 years. His wife, Addie, died at the home of her daughter, Maud Wright, west of Skidmore on March 19, 1936. They were both buried in the Burr Oak Cemetery near the Burr Oak Church which is four and one half miles west of Skidmore.

They were the parents of seven children: Maude O. Wright, Clyde Wesley, Marian M. Ausdell, George Taylor, Harry Weaver, Frank Henry, and Jesse Simeon.
