Arkland – Sep. 10, 1879 at his residence. 4 miles southeast of Annawan, Henry County, IL.
Mr. John M. Arkland, son of Richard and Sarah Arkland, age 48 years and 8 months.
He was born in Quarto, Canada, 10 Jan 1831, and resided at that place until January, 1864, when he moved to Annawan where he lived until his death.
He had been feeling ill at times during the past summer, but was able to attend to his business until Sept 3rd, when he was confined to his bed with something like Intermittent fever, which was broken up, when there appeared a small lump on the right side of the abdomen, which Dr. Putnam, the attending physician thought to be an inward Hernia, which speedily accomplished his death.
He was not only beloved by relatives, but by all his neighbors and acquaintances. He left satisfactory evidence of his confidence in Him who is might to save. He gave his heart to God and joined the Wesleyan Methodist church in Canada about 21 years ago, and was an acceptable member until he moved to this state, when he joined the United Brethren in Christ, with whom he remained in fellowship until death.
His last moments were his best on earth. A short time before he fell asleep he called his family, one by one, kissing them good-bye and exhorting them in the service of God. Closed his eyes and praised God as long as he could speak.
