George was the son of George Washington Lawrence and Mary Ellen Bemenderfer. He married Mae Katherine Poyser (daughter of Oscar Poyser and Mary Catherine Miller) on 15 Sep 1909 in Canton, Stark, Ohio. They had two sons:

George preceded his wife in death. Mae was remarried to Mr. Thurston Chancey Wehrly in 1938 and had no children with him. George's wife, Mae, is buried with her second husband, Thurston.
