Dr. Royal Arista Barker, 90, of Council Grove, KS, passed away Sunday, December 25, 2011, at Morris County Hospital.

He was born to Arista and Louise (Moeller) Barker on a farm in Floyd County in Northern Iowa on December 22, 1921, the first of five children and only son.

Royal joined the Navy Flight Training Program in 1942 during World War II. He received his Navy Wings and became a second lieutenant. in the Marine Corps in September 1943. He went through operational training in torpedo bombers then fighters in Mojave, CA in Corsair aircraft. Honors achieved while in the service were Distinguished Flying Cross, four Air Medals, the Navy Presidential Unit Citation and others. He was honorably discharged in 1953 as a captain.

He graduated from KU medical school in June 1953. He moved to Council Grove in 1957 and practiced with Dr. Robert Blackburn and Dr. James Schultz, until 1988, when he retired.

Royal married Claire Fauteck in January 1944. Together they had five children. She preceded him in death in January 1972. He married Betty L Barnes in March of 1973, adding two sons, making a family of nine.

He was a member of the American Medical Association, Kansas Medical Society, Flint Hills Medical Society, and The Kansas Academy of Family Practice.

Royal was a member of Hearts Club, Country Club, Rotary Club, Bridge groups, American Legion and American Wood Carvers Association. He served as President of the High School Board and later President of the Board of District 417 holding office for about 10 years in all. He was Chief of Staff for Morris County Hospital until his retirement.

He enjoyed many hobbies; golf, bridge, hearts, carving, gardening, traveling, hunting, fishing and at the age of 80, started carving totem poles.

Royal was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Gladys Bryant, Dorothy Tomman and Eleanor Barker.

He is survived by his wife Betty, of the home; children, Leigh (Linda)Barker, of Hilo, HI, Lance (Jennifer) Barker, of Canyon City, OR, Rod (Mary)Barnes, of Lawrence, KS, Jed Barnes, of Olathe, KS, Stephanie Barker and Merry Barker, both of Council Grove, KS, and Tracy (Des) Rock, of Clinton, WA; sister Helen Higgins, of Lamar, MO; grandchildren Zak, Simon, and Maggie Barnes, Abbey (Adrian) Vogel, Carrie (Travis) Goodell, Libby, Laura, and Yazzy Barker, Mikaela and Jesse Barnes, Oliver and Lucy Rock, and great-grandchildren Shaylee Fetters, Karly and Cade Goodell, Pax, Piper and Lola Vogel.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, December 30, 2011, at Council Grove Christian Church. Inurnment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery with military honors. A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home on Thursday, December 29th.
