Scholfield (1913) reads as follows: "Born at Vankleek Hill, Ontario on 29 March 1873, son of Samuel and Leonora Howes, he graduated from high school in 1887 then attended the Toronto College of Dentistry, graduating in 1901 then practicing at Vankleek Hill. He then took postgraduate training in dentistry at Chicago, Illinois, graduated then taught for a time at the college before returning to Vankleek. He moved to Brandon, Manitoba in 1903 where he opened a dental practice. He was a member of the Order of Foresters and the Ancient Order of United Workmen."
