Before fighting in World War I, Luke was in the boating industry. He was a captian of a derrick.

Luke fought in World War I. He was sent to the Infantry where he served the 82nd division 326 regiment company C. He arrived in Englaind in May of 1918 and then went to France in May of 1918. During action it is noted that he was gassed "slightly" on the battle field.

Luke was awarded the Purple Heart due to being wounded in action on Ocotber 16th 1918. Additionally he recieved awareds for involvment in St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne. He recieved a clasp for Defensive sector as well.
