Ferdinand Wills, son of John & Henrietta (Herbst) Wills, was born October 25, 1915 in Butler, PA. “Ferdy” grew up in Chicago, IL and as a youngster, played baseball with the Yankee Flyers. He also served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).
At the age of 20, Ferdy traveled to New York where he remained the rest of his life. He married Mildred Virginia Johnston on June 23, 1940, and they were the proud parents of five children: Ginny, Joyce, Roger, and twins Penny and John. Ferdy served in the U.S. Navy in 1945-1946 as a Seaman First Class, and he received the World War II Victory Medal. He was a career newspaperman and loved his work. For many years, he worked at the New York Daily News as a stereotyper and also served on the Executive Board of the union.
On March 6, 1977, Ferdy Wills passed away at his home in West Hempstead, NY at the age of 61. He is buried at the Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, NY. Survivors include his widow Mildred; daughters Ginny, Joyce and Penny; sons Roger and John; sisters Ann Stone, Martha Wegner, Emma Reinhardt, and Clara Worley; brothers Henry Wills and Clarence Wills; and six grandchildren.
