Funeral services were held for Rex K. Smith on Saturday, Nov. 19 2:30 PM at Waud's Funeral Home in Tillamook.

Rex was born Dec. 11, 1913 in Brownsville, Ore. to Albert and Ora Knight Smith. He passed away Nov. 15, 2011 at his home in Tillamook at the age of 97 less than a month short of his 98th birthday.

Rex's family moved to Tillamook in 1914, traveling by horse-drawn wagon, when he was only one year old. Rex remained a vital part of the Tillamook community for the rest of his life. He graduated with honors from Tillamook High School and as a member of the Oregon National Guard was called into service in the US Army during WWII. Rex served in the South Pacific and was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism under fire.

In 1945 Rex entered into the partnership which was to define his life when he married Emma L. Vantress. Rex and Emma shared a long life full of laughter, partnership and love.

Rex and Ellis Burt owned and operated the Mobil service station in Tillamook for many years. Following his retirement from the station and true to his nature, he drove the van that made daily deliveries that linked the offices of ESD from Tillamook to Nehalem. He brought the same quick smile and upbeat personality with which he greeted customers at the station to the offices all along his route. Rex had high moral standards and approached his life with integrity, concern for others and humor.

An outsdoorsman, known for his high energy and easy manner, he golfed for fun, fished for relaxation and gardened for satisfaction. He helped anyone and everyone he met and loved to make people happy.

Rex was the eldest member of Tillamook Elks Lodge, Tillamook Masonic Lodge, Tillamook Pioneer Association and the Pleasant Valley Grange.

In addition to his beloved wife Emma, Rex is survived by his two children: Kenneth Smith of Portland, and Barbara Smith of Kirkland, Wash. He is preceded in death by one brother, Lynn N. Smith and two sisters, Veda M. Hover and Esther F. Arney.

Interment: Sunset Heights Memorial Gardens, Tillamook.

Memorial contributions may be made to Oregon Public Broadcasting in care of Waud's Funeral Home.
