FALMOUTH -- Martha Lord Bass, 81, of Falmouth and formerly of Wilton and Boothbay Harbor, died on Tuesday, July 5, 2005, at her home in Falmouth.

She was born on Oct. 17, 1923, in Augusta, the daughter of Fred R. and Madeleine S. (Lord) Lord.

She was a graduate of Walnut Hill School, Bradford (Junior) College and Mount Holyoke College. Martha worked for the government during World War II, decoding encrypted messages. She also worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. and was a reporter for the Kennebec Journal prior to her marriage in 1948 to Robert N. "Bunny" Bass. They resided in Wilton for many years. She was active in several service organizations in Wilton, Boothbay Harbor and Portland throughout her lifetime.

She is survived by her husband, Bunny; their five children, all of whom live in Maine; her brother, George M. Lord of Falmouth; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

At her request, there will be no funeral service. Private burial at Lakeview Cemetery, Wilton. Arrangements are in the care of the Wiles Funeral Home, Cremation Service and Remembrance Center, 136 High St., Wilton. Online condolences may be sent to [email protected].
