LAIRD, JR., EDWARD FRANKLIN A 55 years resident of Riverside, CA., passed away of pancreatic cancer at his home in Riverside on April 24, 2006. He was 81. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, Edward actively participated in the Boy Scouts and enjoyed his mischievous adolescence. He had a lifelong interest in aviation, and began designing and building model airplanes in 1935. Edward was drafted into the Army during WWII spending two years in the South Pacific. In Japan, he witnessed firsthand the cruelty and destructiveness of war, especially to children; he devoted his life to helping children and the dispossessed. Edward was a patient, compassionate man, lovingly devoted to his church and family. Using the GI Bill, Edward Laird educated himself in entomology and plant pathology, earning his Masters Degree from the University of Nebraska. While in Omaha, he met the love of his life, Norma Jean Roesky. They married in 1951 and, with their first-born son, Gregory Scott, ventured to southern California where Edward had secured a position as a researcher at the then California Citrus Experiment Station, now a part of the University of California at Riverside. In his work, Edward traveled the Central and Imperial valleys of California. He published numerous journal articles based on his insect research. It was early in his stay in Riverside that his second son, Jeffrey Stuart, was born. Both sons followed their father's love of nature, of the sky, and of flying. Edward enthusiastically supported his sons' interests and pursuits, punctuated always with his sense of humor. They live his example of generosity and kindness. Edward embodied a deep and passionate Christian faith. As an active Methodist all his life, he leaves a strong legacy at Riverside's First United Methodist Church-as an innovative Sunday school teacher, committee member, and advocate for the poor and homeless. He was dedicated to feeding the poor through his church's programs and worked to establish a homeless shelter and center in Riverside. In addition Edward and his wife, Norma, plus his son, Greg, and wife, Lisa Laird, have donated much time and goods to the families served by Frazee Community Center in San Bernardino. All who knew Edward recognized him as a man of deep integrity and loved him as the kindest of men-one who lived his compassionate faith upon this earth. He is now on his way Home. May God bless him. Edward Franklin Laird Jr. is survived by his wife, Norma Jean (Roesky) Laird; his sons, Gregory and Jeffrey of Riverside; their wives, Lisa Laird and Marilyn Sequoia; his granddaughter, Kasey Cole; sisters, Ellen Hickman and Jane Wilson of Delaware, plus numerous nieces and nephews. A private Memorial Service and inurnment will be held at the Riverside National Cemetery. Donations may be sent in Edward's name to the Frazee Community Center, P.O. Box 8250, San Bernardino, California, 92410 (909) 889-4424.
