He enlisted during the Civil War in Company C, 85th Illinois Infantry and was mustered out in June of 1865.

He was married to Minerva Jane Harvey soon after the close of the war.

He was survived by Minerva, children Florence Walls, Ed, and Effle.

He was the last surviving charter member of the local G.A.R. Post.

His funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. F. Siler.
