He was born Harry Joseph Kalinski in Mlawa, Mazowiecke, Poland, and immigrated to the United States from Poland with his parents. He was the eldest of 9 children, the only one not born in the United States. The family first settled in Pittsburgh for a short time before settling permanently in Philadelphia.

In March of 1925 he became a naturalized citizen of the United States under the name of Harry Kalinski. He married Anne M. Walsh (1897-1970) in 1927, changing his name sometime between his naturalization and their marriage to Henry Joseph Kaylen. They had one son, also named Henry Joseph Kaylen (1928-1970), 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. In later years he went by Harry Kaylen.

Harry initially worked as a machinist and rivetter in shipbuilding yards. Later he was a salesman and driver for a meat packing plant.
