CHARLES W. FORD, 82 - of Ventnor, passed away peacefully at his home on September 7, 2009 after a very courageous battle with squamous cell carcinoma. Charlie was born on May 25, 1927 in Pleasantville to his parents Charles and Evelyn Jones Ford.

Charlie left high school to proudly serve his country in WWII and joined the Navy the 1944 and was deployed on a sub chaser during the war and was on the troop transport ship the USS General William Mitchell, which ironically was the same troop ship his son in law Walter was deployed on in 1965 to Vietnam. Charlie served in the Philippines and in the Pacific. After completing his tour of duty he returned to graduate Pleasantville High School in 1947, with his younger sister, Charlotte.

In 1948 he married the girl next door, Jean Swank and on August 27th they celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. Charlie, also known as "Suds Time", worked for Atlantic City Electric for 34 years and retired in 1982 and was a member of their Quarter Century Club. After he retired from the electric company he was a consultant for Elliot-McElwee. Many people knew him as the "Pin Man" at the Pleasantville Bowling Lanes.

Charlie was also very active in the Holy Spirit Father's Club for many years. Charlie had a contagious laugh and always made you feel welcome wherever he was. Charlie enjoyed being with his wife and his friend, Rick Frank to watch NASCAR and other sports at his local haunts, The Home Run, J.D.'s Tavern and The Black Cat. Charlie and Jean enjoyed traveling whether it was on a car trip to Michigan or Buffalo to visit relatives, a cruise from Alaska or to the Panama Canal, as well as other trips including Hawaii, San Francisco and Seattle. He also enjoyed reading and when curious about a subject he would research it until he was fully educated about it. This is why Jean always called him "My Walking Encyclopedia".

His wife, Jean and their three children survive Charlie: Donna Jean and her husband Walter Cannon of Millville, Charles W. Jr. and his wife Michele of Galloway and Beverley and her husband Thomas Gill of Ocean City. Charlie was also the proud "Pop Pop" to his grandchildren: Denise J. Cannon, Patrick H. Ford, Leigh Ann Metzler, Felicia L. Ford and Patrick M. Gill. His sister Charlotte Ford-Spillane of Toms River, his brother-in-law James Swank and his wife Catherine of Somers Point along with his cousins John McCloskey, Oliver Jones, Helen Jones, Carolyn Gurney and Ann Davidson, as well as many nieces and nephews also survives him.

Thank you to Vicky Britko who was Charlie's Holy Redeemer nurse and Holy Redeemer Hospice and Holy Redeemer for their support during this time, as well as all of Charlie's doctors.

Relatives and friends will be received on Saturday, September 12th from 9:30am to 11:30am at the George H. Wimberg Funeral Home, 1707 New Road, Linwood with services immediately following. The burial will follow services at the Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery, Estell Manor.
