Jefferson City News and Tribune, Sunday, March 25, 1973, Jefferson City, Missouri

Mr. Winnie A. Bassman, 77, a lifelong resident of Jefferson City, died unexpectedly Friday night while attending a bridge party. Mr. Bassman apparently suffered a heart attack.

He had served terms as city treasurer and county assessor, and had been active in banking and savings and loan association businesses here, serving as chairman of the board of Mutual Savings and Loan Assn., at the time of his death.

Mr. Bassman was born May 4, 1895, in Jefferson City, the son of Nicholas Albert and Sadie Buehrle Bassman. He was educated in the public schools here.

Mr. Bassman first married the former Miss Sydna VanSickle, who died in 1951. He was married in 1956 to Rosalyn Tanner Sawyer, who survives.

An avid golfer, Mr. Bassman worked for Czarlinsky's from 1912 to 1915. He was employed by the Cole County Bank from 1918 to 1933.

Mr. Bassman became secretary of the South Side Building and Loan Assn. in 1923, where he served until 1952 when the company merged with Mutual Savings and Loan. He became a director of that company in 1945.

Mr. Bassman worked with the Central Trust Bank from 1945 until his retirement in 1962. He was vice president and trust officer with that firm. He was elected president of Mutual Savings and Loan Assn. in 1961, and served in that capacity until his election as chairman of the board in 1972.

Mr. Bassman was elected city treasurer three times, in 1927, 1929 and 1931. He was elected to four-year terms as county assessor in 1932, 1936, 1940 and 1944. He resigned his position as assessor in 1945 when he became associated with Central Trust Bank.

Mr. Bassman was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and served as it's president in 1947. He belonged to the Kiwanis Club, and had belonged to the I.O.O.F longer than any other Jefferson City member.

Mr. Bassman served on the school board from 1963 to 1967, and was on the board of Charles E. Still Hospital for many years. He was a lifelong member of Central United Church of Christ, serving as treasurer from 1924 until 1972.

Other survivors include: A son, Robert O. Bassman, Ballwin; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Sochinski and Mrs. Jane Enloe, both of Jefferson City; a brother, Fred Bassman, Jefferson City; three sisters, Mrs. Helen Schwartz, Jefferson City, Mrs. Amanda Casey, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Miss Sadie Bassman, Hallsville; twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Houser Chapel with the Rev. Robert Herrmann officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Central United Church of Christ or Charles E. Still Hospital.
