NORWICH – Jean M. Lent, 77, former long time Norwich resident and more recently of Oneonta, passed away Tuesday morning, May 6, 2008 at the Kingsway Arms Nursing Home in Schenectady after a long illness.

Jean was born in June of 1930 in Binghamton, the daughter of Ernest and Alice Smith Carvin. She grew up in Potsdam, where she attended the local schools. On Nov. 13, 1948 in Potsdam, she married Carl Lent, who passed away July 4, 2002. Following their marriage, Jean and Carl lived in Oneonta until moving to Norwich in May of 1957 where she resided until 2006, at which time she moved back to Oneonta.

In her early years as a wife, mother and homemaker, Jean chose to stay at home to raise her family. She then gained employment with the Chenango Mutual Insurance Co. in Norwich, where she worked as a billing supervisor for 20 years. Jean was a long time and very active member of the First Baptist Church of Norwich. Gifted with a remarkable singing voice and a love for music, she was a longstanding member of the church’s choir, and as active as she was in church on Sundays, she still found time to spend with her family in the sanctuary. She was also active in Cub Scouts as a Den Mother and was an active member of the Norwich Lioness Club. Above all else, Jean was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother who strongly supported and encouraged her family in all of their endeavors.

Jean is survived by her children and their spouses; David and Florence Lent of Bedford, N.H., Stephen Lent of Mars, Pa., and Charles and Debra Lent of Schenectady; her grandchildren; Nicole Lent of Wickford, R.I., Brian Lent of Medford, Mass., Michael Lent of Buffalo, Richard Lent of Huntington Beach, Calif. and Charlie, Cassidy and Davis Lent all of Schenectady. Also surviving is her brother-in-law Matt Pace and sisters-in-law Rita Carvin and Agnes Light as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her husband Carl, Jean was predeceased by a sister Lorna Pace and her brother, Ed Carvin.

A graveside service for Jean will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday from the Evergreen Cemetery in Otego. The Rev. Kenneth Simpson of Norwich will officiate.

There will be no calling hours.

Please consider memorial contributions to Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Dr., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the American Lung Assoc. of NYS, Utica Area Office, 5096 Commercial Dr., Yorkville, NY 13495 or to one’s favorite charity.
