John Edward Piper was born on February 4, 1845 in Franklin County, Pennsylvania and died in 1924 in Lawrence County, Illinois the son of Oliver Cromwell (78001380) and Nancy Ann Van Scyoc (102527081) Piper.

He married Jemima Houts (82484483) on April 14, 1870 in Lawrence County, Illinois.

John enlisted and was mustered in as a Pvt. on March 22, 1864 in Olney, Illinois at the age of 18 for 3 years. He was mustered out on July 11, 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky. He took part in the Atlanta Campaign and Sherman's March to the Sea as well as other battles during the Civil War.
