Obituary of John W. Boughner, transcribed from the Brown City Banner (newspaper in Brown City, Michigan), 18 Nov 1892, pg. 1:

"The death angel came to Valley Centre, laying its icy hand on Mr. John W. Boughner, one of its most respected and honorable citizens. Mr. Boughner departed this life at 4:30 am, November 9, 1892, after a lingering illness as a result of La Grippe with which he was seized last January, dropsy about four months ago, and since that time he grew gradually worse until his limbs and arms swelled so badly as to burst in several places. Death relieved him. His funeral took place at Valley Centre School House November 11th; Rev. Wm. Cridland conducted the services. His remains were interred in the Valley Centre Cemetery, attended by a large concourse of relatives and friends. The deceased was born near St. Thomas, Ont. Sept 13th, 1831. His parents were of English and German descent. He moved with his father at the age of sixteen to be near Tillsonburg, Ont. While there he married Susannah Forbes. Eight children were born to them, five boys, Wesley, William, Peter, Hiram and Walter, and three girls, Eleanor, Sarah and Ida. His wife died in 1871 and he remained a widower about three years, when he formed the acquaintance of and was later married to Miss Mary Whitelock. They became the parents of four children, Susie, Isabelle, Frances and Esther. Mr. Boughner moved with his family to Marlette in 1882, where he lived two years when he located at Valley Centre, where he has since lived until the time of his death. While in Marlette, his second wife died, leaving him the care and protection of a large family. The deceased was a carpenter and joiner and through industry, frugality and tender love for his family, he maintained and educated his children, giving them the advantage of the best schools in the community in which he lived. Mr. Boughner, though never loud in his profession, was an earnest Christian and made his home with the M.E. Denomination, his highest ambition being to live an honest and upright life and to care for and provide for his children. And in the last hours of his life, when he had resigned himself to the Masters will, his greatest and only anxiety seemed to be about his children, but he committed them to Him who is a Father and protector of the orphan and died in the triumph of living faith, leaving strong evidence to those left behind that he has done to meet the reward of the righteous. He was a member of the fraternal order of Free Masons, belonging to the King Hiram Lodge. In his death, the community loses a loyal citizen and his children a kind and loving father.

Our father has gone to a mansion of rest
From a region of sorrow and pain,
To the glorious land by Deity blest
Where he never can suffer again."
