Civil War Union Army Officer. He served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 47th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, having been instrumental in its recruitment and organization in and around Allentown, Pennsylvania, and being commissioned its commander on September 1, 1861. A long time militia officer, his enforcement of discipline and infantry drills aided the regiment in its preparation for combat during the war. He led the unit in occupation duty in Virginia in late 1861 to early 1862, and in the Union occupation of portions of South Carolina in 1862. He led his brigade during the October 12, 1862 engagement at Pocotaligo, South Carolina, where they took heavy casualties. Returning to regimental command, his unit was transferred to Key West, Florida in November 1862, where they engaged in garrison duty until February 1864, manning the key installations of Fort Taylor and Fort Jefferson. Detailed to Louisiana in early 1864, he commanded his troops at the Battles of Sabine Pass and Pleasant Hill before the 47th Pennsylvania was transferred yet again to another area of operations, this time to the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. Placed in General Philip Sheridan's army, Colonel Good commanded his men at the Battles of 3rd Winchester and Fisher's Hill in September 1864. After the last battle Colonel Good's enlistment expired, and he was honorably mustered out of the Union Army, having served over three years and traveling thousands of miles. After returning to Allentown, he became a prominent member of its society, and was elected as Mayor of the town for two terms.
