June Byfield Mitchell, age of 85, passed away suddenly on Christmas morning at her Treemont residence where she had lived for the past four years.

June was the graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor's degree in Geology and a minor in Botany. She had a passion for plants and trees which led to her beloved job at Cornelius Nurseries where she worked until she was 80 years old. For over 35 years she was known as one of Houston's top floral designers. Christmas was her favorite time of year and preparations started in June leading up to the December crescendo.

Her second great love was all the years she spent singing in the Second Baptist Choir and decorating the church for year round events. Truly the highlight of her life were these fun and joy filled years of serving.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James Mitchell, whom she called Big Daddy. He was the love of her life from the age of 14 and were married 25 years. Also preceeded in death by their second son, Justin Merritt, who died as an infant. Shortly after the loss of her husband, her only sibling and beloved brother, George Byfield passed away.
June's surviving family members include her son and eldest child, James Mitchell, Jr. and her daughter-in-law, Debra; her grandson, Justin and his wife Eva; her great granddaughter Emily Mitchell; and her granddaughter Kristen McCoy. June's eldest daughter, Janet Mitchell Kramer and her son-in-law Milo; and her two grandsons, Austin and Marshall all of Seattle, Washington. June's youngest daughter Jill Mitchell O'Brien and her son-in-law Michael John O'Brien; and their adopted daughter, Jennifer Heard; beloved sister-in-law, Pat Byfield; and many fabulous nieces and nephews on the Byfield and Mitchell side that she adored.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until eight o'clock in the evening on Wednesday, the 28th of December, in the Drawing Room of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

The funeral service is to be conducted at ten o'clock in the morning on Thursday, the 29th of December, in the Hankamer Chapel at Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway Drive in Houston, where Dr. Gary Moore, is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent B Parlor.

On Friday, the 30th of December, the family will gather for a private interment at Seaside Memorial Park in Corpus Christi.

In lieu of customary remembrances, contributions in memory of June may be made to, Houston Revival Center, P. O. Box 41748, Houston, TX, 77241-1748.
