William studied at Finsbury Technical College and then became an estimating engineer at AEG Electric in Cardiff. He then joined the London Electrical Engineers in November 1914. He served in an anti-aircraft searchlight section of the Royal Engineers; in 1916 he held a temporary commission and was posted to the Works Directorate. He served with the British Expeditionary Force in France. He was working as an electrical engineer at the time of his return from Japan.
