Matthew Simpson Clegg, Jr. enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was taken prisoner near Macon, Georgia, and was incarcerated at Andersonville Prison. He was included in a prisoner exchange at the prison in 1864. He gave up his chance to be released by trading places with another prisoner from his home neighborhood. His friend was married and sick with the measels. Matthew agreed to take his friend's name so that his friend could return to his wife and children. Matthew is buried under another soldier's name, whose name is unknown.
